Animated Hobbies was a vendor at the 36th Annual Butch O'Hare Contest on November 10, 2018. It was at a new location, the Holiday Inn in Itasca, Illinois. During a brief lull, I managed to sneak away from my table and check out the model contest room. The video shown below is my second attempt at recording some of the contest entries, the first had a severe glitch. I would have liked to get still photos as well, but things just were too hectic. I hope you enjoy it. Please comment. - Bill Harrison

DIY Model Building Tips, Tricks, Tests, Trials & Troubles
Rocket Project part 1
I’m not sure how to start this blog entry. It's about adding lights to a model. It has some advanced concepts and techniques, but I didn’t want to start out with a bunch of basic primers on electronics. I wanted to show what I had constructed, without waiting for the final pieces to be put in place. This will be a Work In Progress (WIP), shown and explained in installments. So to start, let me show you a video of what I made.
The rocket model is a Pegasus Hobbies Rocketship X-M. It has been glued together, but not puttied or painted. The "flame" exhaust is a strip of Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) called Neopixels. Their brightness and color are controlled by a microcomputer controller, called an Arduino Uno. Software for the flame pattern was downloaded from this site. The video was shot on my iPhone in a darkened room. The video has a bit of lens flare, which makes the flame look more dramatic than in real life, yet the display is impressive when viewed live too.
I'm going to keep this blog entry brief. There are plenty of details to cover, just for this stage of the build. Then there's more building to add on. There's so much detail to be added, I'm going to leave it for later. I'm afraid I could go off on a technical detail tangent and get lost.
What I need to know is this the kind of thing you want to know about. What do you want to know, what details puzzle you? Please add your comments to the blog or email me or message me on Facebook.
